Scientific Background:β-synuclein (phosphoneuroprotein 14; SNCB) is abundant in the central nervous system and is localised at nerve endings but not in synaptic vesicles. β-synuclein is associated with novel axonal pathology in Parkinson’s disease and in dementia with Lewy bodies. Unlike a-synuclein in which two mutations associated with familial Parkinsons disease have been found, no pathogenic mutations have been identified in β-synuclein. β-synuclein expression in the testis changes with developmental stage, being increased markedly when spermatogonia undergo two rounds of meiosis, suggesting a role for β-synuclein in meiosis.
